Conference Welcome

It is a great privilege for us to welcome IB scholars, practitioners, and PhD students to the 45th EIBA Annual Conference in Leeds. This year’s theme addresses the issues facing international business and international management in an era of socio-political turbulence – a topic particularly germane to individuals living, not just in the UK, but many other countries facing unpredicted and unprecedented political change. This page provides you with information about the conference, arriving in Leeds, getting to the campus and other information related to simply having a good time and enjoying the conference and the city.

The best way to keep informed about what is happening is via the Conference APP. All real time announcements at the conference will be sent via the APP and it also links directly into our twitter feed. You will be able to ask questions at the Opening Plenary by using the APP’s chat function and can rate sessions and get access to location and directions and all sorts of useful information. The app allows you to set up your own agenda with notifications so you can get to where you need to be on time!

Getting to/from Leeds

Getting from/to Manchester Airport. The quickest way to get from Manchester Airport is the Transpennine Express service. Trains depart directly from the airport and Leeds is an intermediate stop for routes going to York, Middlesborough, Newcastle and a number of other destinations. Trains depart approximately every ½ hour and take about 1 hour. The cost of an on-the-day open return ticket in standard class is £32.10. Note that if you are coming/going early or late or on the weekend the service is less frequent. If you purchase a TPE ticket please note that these may not be accepted by Northern (which also has trains to Leeds). We do not recommend traveling by Northern as these trains are not express trains and can have up to a dozen or more intermediate stops and be very crowded.

Taxis are available using either a pre-paid service or at the airport. Taxis from Manchester are very expensive (£100+ one way) and are only recommended if you have a lot of luggage or a group to share the expenses. The trip is approximately 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic.

For those taking the train from Manchester Airport to Leeds, there will be a help desk at the Leeds Train Station to guide you to your hotel or the university (more information below).

Getting from/to Leeds Bradford Airport. The Leeds Bradford airport is only serviced by buses and taxis. The Flying Tiger 757 bus goes from the airport to Leeds Train Station. Fares are £3.60 (or £6.00 for a return). You can pay with cash or contactless on the bus. A bus schedule is given here and you can see the inner city route below (buses leave every 20-30 minutes). Note that the buses do not have luggage storage underneath. Hence, if you have a lot of luggage you may be better off getting a taxi. Information on booking a taxi is here and you can do it using the kiosk at the airport (international terminal) or by phone. For those requiring assistance, we will have a special EIBA Help Desk at the airport and train station (see below).

Getting from/to London. LNER has trains to/from Leeds departing from London King’s Cross approximately every ½ hour from around 5 AM. Fares can vary considerably and it is best to pre-book. The trip takes approximately 2 hours.

Getting to the University

Buses to/from the University of Leeds Campus

For those staying at Clayton Hotel and Double Tree by Hilton, the easiest way to get to the University of Leeds campus is by reaching Leeds Station Interchange (stop S5) and get any of the following buses:

• #27 toward Guiseley. After 5 stops drop off at Leeds University (stop D). The stop is in front of the Parkinson Building
• #28LeedsCity toward Adel. After 5 stops drop off at Leeds University (stop C). The stop is in front of the Parkinson Building

For those staying at Hotel Ibis Styles Leeds City Centre Arena the easiest way to reach the University of Leeds campus is to get any of the following buses:

• Walk to Albion Street (Stop J3 – approx. 4 mins walking from the hotel) and get bus # 1LeedsCity toward Holt Park. After 3 stops drop off at Leeds University (stop C). The stop is in front of the Parkinson Building.
• Walk to Great George Street temp (Stop C – approx. 4 mins walking from the hotel) and get bus # 28LeedsCity toward Adel. After 4 stops drop off at Leeds University (stop C). The stop is in front of the Parkinson Building
• Walk to Albion Street (Stop J1 – approx. 4 mins walking from the hotel) and get bus number 56 toward Moor Grange. After 5 stops drop off at the Leeds University Engineering Department. The stop is 2 mins away from the Parkinson Building.

For those staying at Hotel Crown Plaza the easiest way to reach the University of Leeds campus is to get any of the following buses:

• Walk toLeeds Station Interchange (stop S5) – approx. 11 mins walking from the hotel) and get bus # 27 toward Guiseley. After 5 stops drop off at Leeds University (stop D). The stop is in front of the Parkinson Building
• Walk toLeeds Station Interchange (stop S5) – approx. 11 mins walking from the hotel) and get bus number # 28LeedsCity toward Adel. After 5 stops drop off at Leeds University (stop C). The stop is in front of the Parkinson Building
• Walk to Wellington Street (stop W8) and get bus # 16 towards Whinmoor. After 6 stops drop off at York Street. Get to York Street (stop F6) and catch bus # 56 toward Moor Grange. After 5 After 5 stops drop off at Leeds University Engineering Department. The stop is 2 mins away from the Parkinson Building.

How to Buy Tickets: All the routes suggested above are run by FirstLeeds. Bus tickets can be directly bought on the bus with both cash and card and FirstLeeds provides the First App Bus to organise and plan moves within and outside Leeds. All the buses accept contactless payment. The app will also give you the possibility to buy tickets at discounted prices (discounts are provided for students).

Walking to/from the University of Leeds Campus

The University is approximately a 15 minute walk (uphill) from the centre of the city. Below are walking routes from several key hotels. Alternatively (and more easily), there is a link on the EIBA 2019 Leeds Conference App that will bring up the Leeds University Business School location in a map that will direct you to the business school. The most obvious landmark as you walk toward campus is the tower of the Parkinson Building. Just head straight for it!

Taxis to/from the University of Leeds Campus

Taxis are readily available in Leeds, as is Uber. You can contact any taxi service either via phone or app and there are regular taxi stands around the city. At the university there is a taxi stand at the university entrance next to the Parkinson Building. If you take a taxi please direct them to “Leeds University Business School” NOT “Leeds Business School” (which is the business school at another university!). If you need an exact map reference just use the postal code LS6 1AN to take you directly to the Business School. The Business School is on the corner of Clarendon and Moorland Roads.

Moving around the Conference

The main venues for the conference are given below. As the weather in England can be “unpredictable” in winter (ok, anytime actually), please be prepared, as the conference venues are spread out a bit and you will need to move between buildings. Most all PDW, paper and panel sessions are within a 2-3 minute walk as they are in the Western Campus cluster (Clarendon, Maurice Keyworth, Liberty, Charles Thackerah, Meadows and Western Lecture Theatre). However, the poster sessions and lunch on Saturday and Sunday are about a 10 minute walk to the centre of campus (The Refectory). If you click on the link for each building it will provide you with that building’s location on the University of Leeds Interactive Campus Map. There will be signs directing you between the venues and each building with have a large flag marker outside but only starting on 13 December.

• The Clarendon Building (Registration Friday through Monday, Refreshment Breaks & Lunch on Friday, Cloak Check & Luggage Storage). Note that this building was just renovated and the name is new. Hence, it will not be on regular university maps around campus (although it is on the map above that you can download). Just look for the Maurice Keyworth Building as they are next to one another. Note that the “Clarendon Wing” is part of the Hospital and not the place you want to go!
• The Maurice Keyworth Building (DVDB Symposium on Saturday, Paper & Panel Sessions on Saturday & Sunday, Post-Conference Workshops, Refreshment Breaks)

• The Refectory (Lunch & Poster Sessions on Saturday & Sunday. Student Union is next door and has shops cafes & bars)
• The Western Lecture Theatre (EIBA Fellows Plenary on Sunday)

Registration

The Conference Registration Desk is located in the Clarendon Building. It is open Friday 13th December (08:00 – 18:00), Saturday 14th December (08:00 – 17:00) and Sunday 15th December (08:30 – 13:00). The Post-Conference Registration Desk will also be in the Clarendon Building and is open only from 8:00 – 9:00. If you need urgent assistance you can reach the registration desk via email (eiba2019@leeds.ac.uk) or by phoning +44 (0)78 4520 0048.

For those pre-conference participants who have a morning session, please note that you will not have to come to the registration desk to get your materials (indeed, if you go there we will not have them for you). The registration materials for participants in the morning sessions will be in the room where your session will be taking place. This applies to all chairs, discussants and presenters.

Presentations & Posters

All rooms are fully IT equipped. All will have projectors with VGA/HDMI laptop connectors with nearly all having simultaneous writing/projection provision, a visualiser, whiteboard, poster board and DVD/Blue-Ray Players and sound systems (include a lectern mic and lapel mics). To use the system you must be logged into the University of Leeds system. IT support will be available and have all of the rooms ready to go and will be periodically checking the rooms. However DO NOT LOG OUT of the system once your session has finished as this will require someone to come and reopen the system.

You can see the room in which your session has been assigned by going to the link below, choosing the building and then choosing the room. That tells you everything about the equipment, capacity and general layout of the room. If you want to upload your presentation early, just go into that room during a break and upload your presentation onto the desktop.

For those with Posters, you need to bring your poster with you if you printed it out yourself. If you used the University Print Services, your poster will be delivered to The Refectory and be available on the Mezzanine level. The session chairs for the poster sessions will help you with finding your poster location. The poster session overlaps with lunch which will give people plenty of time to interact with you. If you need information about your poster session feel free to reach out to the Chair of your poster session Murod Aliyev (PS1 on Saturday) or Christos Antoniou (PS2 on Sunday).

Work, Talk, Chill, WiFi +

Conversation Spaces and Open Work Areas: We have designated Rooms 3, 4, 5 and 6 in the Meadows Teaching Rooms as Conversation Spaces and Open Work Areas, for delegates who wish to conduct meetings or work during the conference. All these rooms have plenty of tables and chairs and power outlets. You can, of course, work in other rooms in the Maurice Keyworth or Liberty Buildings if they are open and available. We simply ask you to be respectful of others working in these spaces.

Meditation & Prayer Room: We have designated room 1.24 in the Maurice Keyworth Building for delegates requiring space for meditation and prayers. It will be open from 08:00 – 17:00.

WiFi: Eduroam is the university’s main Wifi network. Those with university email addresses should be able to easily join the system. If you do not have access to Eduroam via your university you can get an ID and PASSWORD by sending a text: text the word EIBA to +44 (0)78 6003 9833 and you will receive an ID and PASSWORD by return text. Simply log onto the Eduroam using that information. Some information is here and there will be help desks at the Clarendon Building and in The Refectory.

General and IT Information Desks will be located in the Clarendon Building and the The Refectory/Student Union. They will be open Friday 13th December (08:00 – 18:00), Saturday 14th December (08:00 – 17:00) and Sunday 15th December (08:00 – 17:00). Information is also available from conference workers who will be wearing EIBA 2019 sashes.

Safety & Security: The National Police/Emergency number is 999. It can be called or texted. You can also use 112 as this will work on any mobile anywhere and give directions via the closest cell tower. For non-emergencies please use 101. For the University of Leeds, the security office is located at 175 Woodhouse Lane and their email is security@leeds.ac.uk. Their direct numbers are: +44 (0)113 343 5494 or +44 (0)113 343 5495 (non-emergencies) and +44 (0)113 343 2222 (emergencies only).

Smoke Free Campus: The University of Leeds is a smoke free campus, meaning that any cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking is banned throughout the physical space of the campus, including the outdoor areas. University enforcement officers will cite individuals found smoking in the campus area and the policy applies 7 days a week. Vaping is permitted in outdoor areas only. The policy is outlined here.

Food & Drink

Lunch: On Friday 13th December, lunch will be held on the first floor of the Clarendon Building. On Saturday 14th December and Sunday 15th December lunch will be held in The Refectory (which will also be the location of the Plenary Poster Sessions). A variety of different menus will be available with Saturday’s lunch theme being “international fare” and Sunday’s lunch theme “local Yorkshire fayre”. Sunday will also feature a market at the Student Union featuring local products for purchase.

Coffee, Tea & Refreshments: Coffee and Tea will be available throughout the conference. On Friday 13th December, there will be a continuous coffee/tea service the Clarendon Building and the Refreshment Breaks will be held in the Charles Thackerah and Maurice Keyworth Buildings in the morning and in the Clarendon Building in the afternoon. On Saturday 14th December and Sunday 15th December, there will be a continuous coffee/tea service in the Exhibitors Room (Meadows MT2) and in all the venues during the scheduled breaks.

Local Shops, Bars & Cafes: There are a number of shops, bars and cafes located in the basement of the Student Union Building. These are normally open all day and 7 days a week (although as classes have ended they may have limited weekend hours). There are also a number of shops along Blenheim Terrace across from the Parkinson Building.

The Big Events!

A series of social and intellectual events will be happening at, or in conjunction with, the conference. More information about some are available on the Social Programme Page and the Programme Pages.

The Business Confucius Institute will be holding a special event on Thursday 12 December that EIBA Conference participants are free to join. You will have been asked to indicate your participation in this event during registration. Chandru Iyer, Head of Business Development for Grant Thornton UK’s South Asia Group, will be talking about Chinese and Indian Investment into the UK: Tracking Leading Firms and Future Trends. Registration for the talk begins at 17:30 and it will be held in the Maurice Keyworth Building. More information is available here. The event will finish by 19:30 for those that have PDW related dinners that evening.

New Member Meet & Greet: The new member Meet & Greet will be held at 17:10 on Friday 13 December in the Parkinson Court, which is the ground floor of the Parkinson Building (the main University Building at the entrance of the campus). Come and meet the EIBA board. The EIBA country representatives will be identified by the flag they are waving!

Opening Plenary: The EIBA 2019 Opening Plenary will be held in the Great Hall which is one of the original buildings on campus and next to the Parkinson Building. You can view the panelists biographies here. This will be preceded by a Welcome from the Vice Chancellor of the University of Leeds at 18:30 on Friday 13 December. You will be able to interact with the panel via the “chat” function on the EIBA Conference APP. Just select the session and start chatting by clicking on the chat icon (💬)in the far upper right.

Welcome Reception: The EIBA 2019 Conference Welcome Reception will be held in Parkinson Court (the ground floor of the Parkinson Building beginning at 20:00 on Friday 13 December. There is a direct link between the Great Hall and the Parkinson Building and Conference staff will be directing people from the Plenary to the Reception.

EIBA General Assembly: The EIBA General Assembly (Annual General Meeting) will be at 15:45 on Saturday 14 December in the Maurice Keyworth Building G.02. New Officers will be elected and reports tabled and presented to the membership.

PhD Student on the Town: All PhD students and anyone else who wishes to have fun to join the EIBA 2019 PhD Student Social Event on Saturday 14 December. Information about the event is available on the Social Programme Page. You can contact Christian Luise for more information.

EIBA Fellows Plenary: The EIBA Fellows Plenary will be held in the Western Lecture Theatre (adjacent to the Liberty Building) at 10:30 on Sunday 15 December. This year’s Honorary Fellow is Professor Michael Storper from UCLA and LSE. More information is available here.

PIBR Book Launch: Volume 15 of PIBR, <i>Progress in IB Research in an Increasingly VUCA World</i>, will be launched at a panel session at 14:00 on Sunday 15 December in the Maurice Keyworth Building G.02.

The EIBA 2019 Gala will be held at the Royal Armouries. Information is available on the Social Programme Page. You can walk to the Royal Armouries from the city centre but bus transportation will be available from both the University and in the city. Buses will then return to the city centre. The schedule is below.

What Else to Do in Leeds?

This is an extremely busy time of the year in Leeds and a lot will be going on. Leeds, does not have a specific “centre” in the sense of having a market place like many European cities. However, it has an enormous number of bars & restaurants as well as museums and sites to see. To make it easier we have put together an “About Leeds” page that outlines things to do. We have also put together two maps that provide location information for bars/pubs and restaurants around the city.
